1940 Waco VPF-7

Originally built for the World War II Civilian Pilot Training Program, this 1940 Waco VPF-7 was delivered to Airways Inc. in Waterville, Maine, where it was operated by Wesley Marden to train pilots preparing for wartime service.

More than 80 years later—long after Airways Inc. had closed its doors and the Marden family had dispersed across the country—the aircraft was rediscovered in Belgium by Tom and Michele Marden. Tom is the grandson of Wesley Marden, the Waco’s original owner and operator.

Following an extensive 3.5-year restoration, the aircraft—now bearing the registration N29368—returned to the skies with three generations of Mardens aboard: Wesley’s son, grandson, and great-grandson, all united in the cockpit of the very plane that began their family’s aviation story.

Today, Tom and Michele Marden operate Van Sant Airport, proudly continuing the legacy begun by their grandfather. Through scenic flights, meticulous aircraft restoration, and a deep passion for aviation, they keep the spirit of flight alive at this historic airfield they now call home.
